Earth Songs

140920 Climate March

Other pages also have earth-centered songs.  Categories blur into each other.  “Songs by Stephen Miller” which is the major heading for this subheading and “Songs for Worship” are places to look. Here are a few more songs with environmental themes.

“Reach to the Earth” (click here for lyrics)

Reach to the earth! Reach to the Sky!
Spirit is everywhere: both low and high!
Reach to your head! Reach to your toes!
Spirit in everything: Even in those!
Hug one to one! Hug two to two!
In me and you. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“We Can Have Clean Water” (click title for lyrics)

We can have clean water;
We can have clean air;
We can have good food
If only we dare.

There is enough water;
There is plenty of air;
There’s enough food for all;
There’s enough if we share.

The earth is a good provider,
And we are a part of the earth.
We give and receive, and we laugh and we grieve
Through each death and in every new birth.

The earth is our vulnerable lover;
We take and decide how to give.
We thank or we fuss; it is up to us;
We abuse earth or let our earth live.

“I Am the Water” (click on title for lyrics)

“I Am the Water”
I am the water
	flowing to the sea.
More than any droplet
	in the process I see me.

I am the ocean
	misting to the sky.
As each atom rises
	I celebrate; it is I.

I am the desert
	thirsting for some rain.
Now I see great beauty
	in the contours of my pain.

In the primordial Womb of the universe
	I look beyond myself and I see me.
Every quark of my being is here in creation
	From big bang to whatever will be.

I am the wonder
	of the universe around.
Each moment of creation
	Connects me; I am found. ©2005 Stephen J. Miller

“Garbage” (click for lyrics)

I went to take my garbage out;
The can was completely full.
I couldn’t get the lid on tight;
There was simply no more room.
The garbage trucks had stopped their rounds;
The landfill had shut down;
The message came through loud and clear
Keep your garbage, keep your garbage,
Keep your own garbage, it’s yours.

The trash icon on my crowded screen
Was bulging it was full
I clicked the mouse on empty trash,
But the trash can remained full.
Utilities were malfunctioning;
It must be some new bug.
The message still is loud and clear;
Keep your garbage…

I went to see my therapist;
My life was again a mess.
I unloaded lots of feelings
To get them off my chest.
The therapist said, “It’s your life.
You live with all you do.”
The message is the same you know:
Keep your garbage …

The landfills may not all be full,
My hard drive’s still got space.
My history sure does stay with me,
But I’m just as full of grace.
Now grace may be recycling,
And every bit remains.
So garbage is the new resource, so:
Keep your garbage … (copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“The World Is a Fickle Filter” (click for lyrics”

The world is a fickle filter
Where only the fittest will survive
And now our species in the crosshairs
Is looking for a way to stay alive

Yes, times like this may get so tense
That cowards turn to violence
And demand material recompense
And proving that they have no sense
They build an even bigger fence
To keep from being free.
But now we hear a few who say
That we can find another way
And live to love another day
But they don’t name the price we’ll pay
If dice are tossed and we won’t play
Because of what we see.

The world is a fickle filter
Where only the fittest will survive
And now our species in the crosshairs
Is looking for a way to stay alive

Since cowards think that might makes right
And have not even slight insight
They’re all day and all night uptight
They think the choice is flight or fight
But looking now in light so bright
We see a better way.
As Gandhi, King, and Jesus show
There’s more to life than yes and no
The answer’s found in winds that blow
Where violence can never go
So we’ll stand fast and peace will grow
Forever and a day.

The world is a fickle filter
And peace is now needed to survive
So now let’s live in a world that dares
To know peace is the way to stay alive.

We’ll give our species a new lease
As more and more insist on peace
Nonviolent resistance will increase
And the power of love it will release
So the threat of war will finally cease
Wherever one may roam.
In partnership with all the earth
We’ll give Mother Earth a second birth
As all around our earth’s great girth
We’ll love and laugh for all we’re worth
But it will be much more than mirth;
It will be shalom!
The world is a fickle filter
And peace is now needed to survive
So now let’s live in a world that dares
To know peace is the way to stay alive. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“We Are a Young Planet” (click for lyrics)

1.We are a young planet;
We are the Earth;
New life proliferates;
We’re still giving birth.

2. We are a brand new species –
Humanity –
We might destroy ourselves with
Our vanity!

3. Our earth renews herself!
We can join in;
It may not be too late,
So now let’s begin.

4. Fifteen billion years ago
The universe began
Expanding to infinity
More than we think it can.
Another 5 billion years went by
Before the birth of our sun;
And in patient cosmic ordering
Creation was not done.
(repeat 1,2,3)

5. The human species did evolve
Just forty thousand years ago
We could now become extinct
Or have the wisdom to grow.
We’ve sure done a lot of damage here
Though we haven’t been around very long;
But we’ve also shown the ability to choose
And to know there’s a right and a wrong.
(repeat 1,2,3)    (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
