Songs for Worship

These are songs and hymns I’ve written for church settings.  Scores are available upon request. Many can also be sung to standard hymn tunes. If your faith community uses CCLI, please report any use of my songs.  I appreciate knowing if the songs are used whether or not I receive a royalty.

“Awakening” (click to see lyrics)

Awakening at dawn, the new day looks around
With a vision of wonder and grace.
Wind has cleared the air for all the sights and sounds
Of the magic about to take place.
Let us fill this day with love,
Harmony, and peace.
Give the day the best our life’s made of,
As we see all our loving increase.

Welcome next the night with what the dark reveals,
As the stars that were hiding now shine.
Glare of day is gone and night has come to heal
With the rhythms of nature’s design.
Let our love make the night time bright,
Fear and stress fade away.
Breathe in the depths of the wonder of the night,
Then awaken to another wondrous day.

Time moves along from day to night to day
As the calendar turns page to page.
Each passing day with creation yearns to say
Celebrate, and now welcome this new age.
Let this time offer us its store
Of depth in work and play.
Each moment could be the time we’ve waited for
As with open arms and hearts we seize the day. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Elusive Power of Life” (click for lyrics)

Elusive Power of Life, we come to you in prayer.
We feel you in our beating hearts, and breathe you in the air.
Though you are close at hand, we ask you to draw near.
Please center our disjointed thoughts and make our vision clear.
Please hear us now confess, we need your warm embrace.
Please heal us with redeeming love and fill us with your grace.
With thankful hearts and minds We think of what you give
Please teach us how to share our joy, rejoicing as we live.
Mysterious Power of Love, please grow in all we do:
in how we feel toward all the world as we respond to you. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Give Me Your Hand, Oh Lord” (click for lyrics)

Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!
Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!

I don’t know where I’m going.  I don’t know where I’ve been.
I don’t know, but I’m ready to follow the whisper in the wind.
Whisper now in the Wind.

Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!
Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!

You were there at the start. You’ll be there in the end.
Help me feel your presence now as I reach through the air to the wind.
Please be with me in the Wind.

Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!
Give me your hand, Oh Lord! Give me your hand and lead me on!

We walk together by faith. I want to walk by sight.
Yet I know you are there by my side as I walk in the wind in the night.
Thanks for the Wind in the night. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Celebrate Diversity” (click for lyrics)

Chorus:
Celebrate Diversity! Yes, join with all humanity
To praise God’s creativity! Celebrate Diversity!

The rainbow paints the sky
With more than solid blue.
We’ve got to have the pinks and greens,
The reds and yellows too.
So celebrate being what you are,
And to yourself be true.
Celebrate everyone around:
What each of them is too.
(chorus)

In race and nationality,
And colors of every shade,
With all our cultures and ways of life,
We all are wonderfully made.
We’re many sizes and shapes and styles,
And some have funny ears.
Everyone’s beautiful in God’s sight:
Our faces, feet and rears.
(chorus)

The rainbow of sexuality
Is more than straight or gay.
God makes us in so many ways,
We’re more than we can say.
So being gay isn’t just okay;
It’s wondrous in God’s sight;
And if you’re straight, then celebrate!
Even that is still alright.
(chorus)

In intelligence and abilities
We’re different as can be.
We need each other in order to be
A whole community.
So celebrate being what you are,
And to yourself be true.
Celebrate everyone around:
What each of them is too.
(chorus) (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“The Spirit Lives Today” (click for lyrics)

The Spirit lives today
In eagerness to change;
In those who hear the future call
In sounds so new and strange.

The Spirit lives today
Though some try to escape;
As patriarchal structures fall
Communities take new shape.

The Spirit lives today
As language will reflect;
As gender and ethnic consciousness
Find words which can connect.

The Spirit lives today
In all that’s fresh and new;
As life comes forth because of us
Or in spite of all we do. (copyright © Stephen J. Miller),/pre>

“Team Song” (click for lyrics)

 We are loved! We are empowered! We need not fear! The spirit is with us always! The Spirit is with us here.

It’s time to show we care; we all have gifts to share; let’s be the ones who dare to give ourselves.
Because needs are all around for healing to abound; let’s hear the joyful sound of God shouting love again.
We are loved! We are empowered! We need not fear! The spirit is with us always! The Spirit is with us here.

We’re in the midst of change; it’s really not so strange that all things rearrange and need new forms. So with all our different dreams we’ll serve in loving teams As God in Christ redeems our lives and others through our love.
We are loved! We are empowered! We need not fear! The spirit is with us always! The Spirit is with us here.

With all our edges chipped communion still is sipped, And thus we are equipped to be God’s Word. Yes, we all are processes in shared uniquenesses So all our church confesses grace as the privilege to serve.
We are loved! We are empowered! We need not fear! The spirit is with us always! The Spirit is with us here. (copyright © Stephen J. MIller)
“All We Have Has Been Provided” (click for lyrics)

[You could use a popular hymn tune with these lyrics. 87.87D Hymns which work are Hymn to Joy ("Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee"), Converse ("What a Friend We Have in Jesus"), Beecher ("Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"), Beach Spring ("Restless Weaver"), & Hyfrydol ("Come Thou Long Expected Jesus," etc.).
87.87 tunes which work include Galilee ("Jesus Calls Us, O'er the Tumult") Agape ("For the Bread Which Thou Hast Broken"), Rathbun ("In the Cross of Christ I Glory"), & The Servant Song ("Sister, Let Me Be Your Servant").]

All we have has been provided;
We’ve received and now we give.
We are called to be loves channels;
In our gifts we learn to live.
Every rock and all the mountains,
Each child and humanity,
We can touch them for a moment
As we glimpse eternity.

Every tree and every forest,
Grains of sand on every beach,
All is given for our pleasure,
Holding on is past our reach.
As our lives are temporary,
What we keep will pass away.
What we give can keep on living
And give meaning to today.

Waters all flow through the river,
None can be held back for long.
We as rivers of God’s blessings
Give ourselves as God’s love song.
All we have has been provided;
We’ve received and now we give.
We are called to be loves channels;
In our gifts we learn to live. (copyright © Stephen J. MIller)

“Shaped by a Mighty Wind” (click for lyrics)

We or our ancestors have come from many places —
Some from near, but most from far away.
With all of our ethnicity, our cultures and our races,
With all of our traditions, now we pray
That all that would divide us,
May somehow now unite us.
Pulled together, held together by power from beyond —
Community, shaped by a mighty wind.

We and our families have many ways of living —
Married, single, relating in new ways.
With all our sexuality in covenantal giving,
From different orientations each one prays
That all that would divide us,
May somehow now unite us.
Pulled together, held together by power from beyond —
Community, shaped by a mighty wind.

Sands across the desert and clouds across the sea
Go where the strong winds blow;
So the rainstorms and the sand dunes take shape where they will be
And decide together where the river flows.
We all in our different ways are seeking deep communion;
God’s great variety must pervade;
And the Spirit blows societies for creation’s sweet reunion,
And somehow we discover what God has made.

We in community now seek the Spirit’s leading,
Learning the Wind blows where it will.
We celebrate diversity, responding to God’s pleading.
Wind keep blowing, move us on until
All that would divide us,
May somehow now unite us.
Pulled together, held together by power from beyond —
Community, shaped by a mighty wind. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“All Creation Shouts with Thanks” (click for lyrics)

All creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices!

Sweet corn roasts on red hot coals; We smell the warm fresh bread;
A child is singing to herself; She’s loved and housed and fed.
Friends and family gather round Recalling days gone by;
Tangled distant reminiscence, How the time does fly.
Now All creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices!

Now’s the time of jubilee; All anguish now be gone;
The splendor of the golden mist, the blaze of hope at dawn —
We shall feast and celebrate, Whatever yet may come;
We sing and dance and now we feel The beat of joyful drum!
So all creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices!

All the colors of the world, The rainbows, rocks, and races,
All our cultures, and our faiths, Our sacred times and spaces –
We join in our diversity, Our different looks and sounds,
Life, joy, laughter, and our tears, In love are common ground —
As all creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices!

Every day is harvest time For those who understand.
Gifts are given and received In near and distant lands.
There are those who keep the gifts, And there are those who share;
And there are those who do without Until we learn to care —
When all creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices!

Grain is buried in the soil With hope that it will grow;
It comes forth a thousand fold; We reap just as we sow.
Fallen leaves produce the soil; The dead renew and live!
We sow and plow and harvest now With all the thanks we give —
so all creation shouts with Thanks! Let us lend our voices!
Earth provides such bounteous goodness; All the world rejoices! (Copyright© Stephen J. Miller)

“One Great Spirit” (click for lyrics)

There are four strong winds, but one great Spirit.
There’s Sun, moon, and stars, but one great light.
There’s water, rock, and fire, but they’re all made of atoms.
There are thousands of religions, and all of them are right.

But I’ll hoist my sail and set my direction.
I’ll choose which stars to follow through the night.
I’ll build with solid bricks and drink cool water.
I’ll commit to a faith and serve with all my might.

Now those same strong winds cause death and destruction,
And there’s a neon glittered glare in which I don’t belong,
And everything blows up in the energy of atoms.
And all those right religions are also always wrong.

So we’ll face the storms and find the calm beyond them.
We’ll turn from the glare to which the crowds still throng.
We’ll face both the matter and the energy of atoms,
We’ll challenge every faith, yet sing a faithful song.

Now we feel the wind as it takes us on our journey.
We see the stars as they guide on through the night.
We’re refreshed by the waters and warmed by the fires;
And there are times when our faith is much clearer than our sight.

So we hoist our sail, and we set our direction.
We choose which stars to follow through the night.
We build with solid bricks, and we drink cool water.
We commit to our faith and serve with all our might. (Copyright © Stephen J. Miller)

“Energy” (click for lyrics)

We gather as a congregation
To seek the strength of love and grace.
Energy comes in celebration;
Energy comes to fill this place.

Wind has the force to change the weather
Though it may move what’s in the way.
The Spirit comes when we’re together;
It brings the strength for which we pray.

Sunshine and rain bring forth the living.
Both joy and pain may help us grow.
Receive the gifts that God is giving;
Take in the love and let it show.

Energy’s here is celebration!
Energy comes to fill this place!
Love overflows this congregation!
Embraced by God, we now embrace! (copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Create a Silence” (click for info and lyrics)

 "Create a Silence" expresses a prayer in simple lyrics and tune. Later I put the idea into a different form as "Great Creator of All Sound." Here's the earlier version:

Please, Oh God, create a silence within me.
Awaken my spirit to hear.
Please, Oh God, open my life to your message;
Let me hear your special word.

Please, Oh God, create a blank screen within me.
Awaken my spirit to see.
Please, Oh God, open my life to your vision;
Let me see your special sign.

Please, Oh God, create new senses within me.
Awaken my spirit to feel.
Please, Oh God, Awaken my life to awareness.
Let me feel your presence now. (copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Great Creator of All Sound” (click for info and lyrics)

 "Great Creator of all Sound" evolved from "Create a Silence."

Great Creator of all sound
Giver of all silence too.
Give a silence now within,
That we might tune in to you.
Open our ears to your word,
Even in all of life’s blare;
Let us hear your calming voice;
Let us hear your special prayer.

Great Creator of all light,
And of darkness without end,
Give a space within our hearts,
For the visions that you send.
Open our eyes to your light,
Even in all of life’s glare;
Let us see your radiant light;
Let us see your graceful prayer.

All sensations come from you;
Smells and tastes are just a few;
Give awareness in our souls
Of a world so full of you.
Though we may feel life’s barrage,
Let us find you everywhere;
Let us feel your healing touch;
Let us feel your wondrous prayer. (copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
“Comfort” (click to view lyrics)

We look for comfort in God’s Love
In each new challenge we may face.
Now comfort comes as from above
In serving daily in God’s grace.

We search for truth along the way
As facts confuse and bring disgrace.
Now truth emerges as we stay
In touch with love found in this place

We long for meaning deeper still
Than all the sound-bytes we have heard
Now meaning finds us as we thrill
To live the new and ancient word.

We yearn for peace in mind and heart
As conflicts rage on every hand.
Now peace is with us as we start
To show God’s love with every land. (copyright © Stephen J. Miller)
